- Use the numbers 1 to 12 for hours.Example: 1 (una), 2 (dos), 3 (tres), ..., 12 (doce).
- Minutes are expressed using the numbers 1 to 59.Example: 1 (uno), 2 (dos), 3 (tres), ..., 59 (cincuenta y nueve).
- Time phrases:
- Morning:From midnight to noon.In Spanish: de la madrugada, de la mañana.
- Afternoon:From noon to around 6 or 7 PM.In Spanish: de la tarde.
- Evening/Night:From around 6 or 7 PM to midnight.In Spanish: de la noche.
Constructing Sentences
- Use "es" to say "it is."Example: "Es la una" (It's one o'clock).
- Use "y cuarto" to say "quarter past."
- Use "menos cuarto" to say "quarter to."
- Use "y media" to say "half past."
Examples
- Exact Hours:"Son las dos" (It's two o'clock)."Son las once" (It's eleven o'clock).
- Quarter Past and Quarter To:"Son las tres y cuarto" (It's three fifteen)."Son las cinco menos cuarto" (It's quarter to five).
- Half Past:"Son las siete y media" (It's seven thirty).
- Time of Day:"Es de la madrugada" (It's in the early morning)."Es de la tarde" (It's in the afternoon)."Es de la noche" (It's in the evening/night).
Additional Tips:Use "a.m." and "p.m." as in English when specifying times, especially with the 12-hour clock system.Practice listening to and saying the time in Spanish to reinforce your understanding.
